| La Ceiba on the coast of Honduras |
|
A hidden tropical paradise best describes the tranquil town of La Ceiba located on the North coast of Honduras. The city is a sleepy Caribbean destination most popular for its notoriuos nightlife and magnificent nature. Eco-tourismLa Ceiba has for a long time been the favorite spot for eco- travelers, back packers and bird watchers. With low cost lodging and extraordinary access to pure nature, it is easy to see why. Pico Bonito National ParkThe Pico Bonito National Park lies within the mountain range Nombre de Dios which towers the city in the South. The park consists of 265,000 acres which makes it one of the biggest national parks in Honduras. Bird watchers calls it paradise and travel across the world to get a chance to spot one of the over 400 species of birds reciding in the park. Among these are extremely rare birds like the mot-mot, cotinga and tanager. They are still discovering new birds in the park adding to the long list. Cuero y SaladoOn the west side of La Ceiba lies a wet land triangle created to protect the mangrove coastline and the manatee population that has over 50 individuals. The entrance lies 33 km west of the city and to get into the park you go by small train first that was originally used to transport bananas, then by 6-seated boat. Among rare birds, you might also see monkeys, manatees, butterflies, iguanas, alligators and other wildlife. Cayos CochinosThe keys right outside the coast are 2 islands and 13 small keys and is a protected marine park. The world's 2nd largest barrier reef crosses its path and the diving is supreme. The boat ride to Cayos goes from Sambo Creek and takes about 40 minutes. On the Islands the beaches are sandy white surrounded by turqoise waters that begs you to take a swim. The girlfriend of HondurasOr the bride of Honduras, is what Hondurans call their cherished coastal city. La Ceiba has grown rapidly in the last 3-4 years and continues to grow into a modern tourist destination. Still there is a long way to go, and hopefully we can enjoy the tranquil, caring and charming city a little bit longer. |
